Luton bus

This phrase comes from the 1942 film Cat People and has become a staple of the horror genre ever since.

It’s named after a scene when ‘Alice’ is walking alone at night, the street silent except for her footsteps. She moves between the light and shadow cast by the street-lamps, gripping her coat tight and constantly glancing behind her. Finally the tension breaks with the sudden, loud, jolting whistle-screech of a bus pulling up – the “Luton bus”.
