Odaxelagnia

Definition from Wikipedia: “A paraphilia concerning sexual arousal through biting, or being bitten. It has associations with vampire lifestyles but does not necessarily involve bloodletting.”

Treatment suggestions from RightDiagnosis.com: “Many people simply learn to accept their fetish and manage to achieve gratification in an appropriate manner. If treatment is sought, general treatment options may include psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, orgasmic reconditioning.”

Support from a random Yahoo Answers post that showed up in my Google search: “Do what you gotta do! There was a CSI episode on this once! If you like to be bitten, good for you. This isn’t the weirdest fetish out there.”

Nina Dobrev is Queen of The Underworld

promo poster for Vampire Diaries season 3

You know, Persephone Queen of The Underworld? Stolen away from her overbearing mother by Hades to live in the land of the dead because he’s in love with her? Finally returned when Demeter struck the world barren during her search for her daughter and Zeus caved because of the people’s pleas for food?

Yeah, of course you know.

There’s that whole thing about Hades tricking her into eating a handful of pomegranate seeds  before she went home so that she’d have to return to the Underworld for part of the year (thereby explaining the seasons when nothing will grow), but you were about to say that, right?

Right.

I’m also getting a bit of a Lady Macbeth vibe – a little bit “look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under it”, a little bit “unsex me here and fill me from crown to toe topful with direst cruelty” and just a touch of the classic “out, damned spot”.

OMG, you were just about to say that?!

miscellaneous stakes

Ah yes, the miscellaneous stakes drawer. Doesn’t everyone who grew up watching Buffy have one of these?

Tyler Shields

This guy is amazing. His photographs veer from absolute beauty to total gore to flat-out weird, and a lot of his work looks kind of effortless, like he just happened to be in the right place with a camera as Michael Trevino and Lindsay Lohan had their little vampire outburst.

I’ve read some criticism over his use of violent imagery, but that’s the difference between shooting for yourself and shooting for  commission – if anyone out there doesn’t like these photos, they don’t have to look at them. Art is entirely subjective so every person can (and usually does) have a different opinion.

Take a look at his website, it’s not for the faint of heart but if you’re interested in photography in any way it will do you good.

Goes without saying, the photos below belong to His Highness Mr Shields.

THE END OF THE WORLD

Last night I had this idea to create a blog to document a new thing I’ve learnt every day. This morning I found out that the world is supposed to end tonight. So…yeah. Not only is the Rapture going to send humanity spinning headlong into months of Hell on earth for not believing sufficiently in God, but there’s going to be no season 3 of Vampire Diaries. Not cool.

I’ve decided I don’t want that to be the thing I learnt today and instead, there’s this – Fleetwood Mac wrote and recorded their greatest album Rumours while their personal lives were pretty much falling apart. (Yes, I learnt about this from Glee but the story still stands.) They were getting divorced, fighting all the time, basically stomping all over their own and each other’s hearts and souls but somehow managing to pour all that pain into the music. It’s an incredible thing to be able to create something so beautiful out of something so destructive.

I’ve always believed that music has fantastically cathartic and curative powers and for me this proves it. Goodness knows I’ve had my share of bad days and, maybe it’s my musical background, but I’ve often found that the right song can completely change my mood. In this case I’m off to listen to Nobody’s Fault But Mine and hope that the world is still as I left it when I wake up tomorrow.
